Until recently, the music industry had been starved for legislation to bring copyright law in line with digital realities. Now, humans and technology must work together to fix even more issues.

Until very recently, the music industry had been starved for legislation to bring copyright law in line with digital realities. In 2018, more than two decades after the passage of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act , the Music Modernization Act finally passed, introducing provisions aimed at improving the distribution of royalty payments.

At the core of these problems is the unfortunate state of data quality within the music industry. While organizations such as Apple, DDEX and the Music Business Association have provided rigorous guidelines to help content providers improve the quality of their metadata, the industry at large has yet to fully conform to a universal standard.
