Why Do Some Relationships Strengthen, While Others Decline?

Partners should talk with each other about their deepest desires and aspirations for life.Research often raises questions about what underlies its findings. Such is the case with two recent studies about relationship satisfaction. One looked at patterns in satisfaction overall, throughout couples’ years. The other examined two different reasons couples have sex and how that affects partners’ feelings about their relationship.

and is based on more than 165,000 people from around the world. It found that relationship satisfaction rises and falls in predictable waves. That is, the findings revealed a steady decrease of couples’ satisfaction up until about 40 years of age—roughly about 10 years after the beginning of a relationship. Then, satisfaction appears to increase until about age 65 and remains stable over the next 10 years—which was the upper age limit of the study’s participants.
