The summit comes some six months after the start of Biden's tenure in office, offering him the chance to set the tone for relations with the Russian leader in person following a contentious start to their relationship.Wednesday's private meetings grant the President, who has sometimes stumbled in his messaging while in front of the press, the opportunity to confront Putin directly and without cameras. Later, Biden be able to deliver his own message to reporters about the talks without the pressure of speaking alongside an adversary. Instead of potentially facing the press with dueling messages about US-Russia relations, Biden and Putin will hold solo press conferences following the summit.TIMELINE: Biden's experience with Russia, in key moments from 1973 to nowRead MoreThe decision to not hold a joint press conference was something for which White House officials had pushed. Officials have said Russia pushed for a joint press conference during negotiations about the summit. But the US resisted because they did not want to give Putin a platform like he had after a 2018 summit with former President Donald Trump in Helsinki.Officials said they were mindful of Putin's desire to appear like he'd gotten the better of a US president, and wanted to avoid a situation that devolved into a tit-for-tat playing out in public. The decision also comes at the advice of a group of Russia experts who met with the President earlier this month, according to sources familiar with the discussion."This is not a contest about who can do better in front of a press conference or try to embarrass each other," Biden said on Sunday, explaining the decision. The US-Russia talks are expected to take place at a lakeside villa in Switzerland and last around five hours or longer, according to a US official. Despite their lengthy agenda, the leaders are not expected to break bread.Setting the toneIn his first months in office, Biden made clear that Russia would face ramifications for a slew of actions against the US. He told a reporter in March that he agreed that Putin was a"killer." And in April, the Biden administration issued sweeping sanctions and diplomatic expulsions over its interference in the 2020 US election, its SolarWinds cyberattack and its ongoing occupation and"severe human rights abuses" in Crimea. But when issuing those new sanctions, Biden also underscored that the US still wants"a stable, predictable relationship" with Russia. Jan. 6 committee live updates: Police officers recount brutal, racist attack by Trump mob
The House select committee on Jan. 6 is holding its first hearing. Lawmakers are hearing dramatic accounts from police officers who defended the Capitol from the attack.
We know the reason, they attack Ukraine , hacked into our system, put our troops at risk and ... This is a nice way for CNN to day Biden has dementia 'confront' - my a** Oh, look who likes President Biden’s messaging…THE WHOLE FREAKING WORLD. Stop making chaos, CNN. He will probably forget what he was talking about
Jeffrey Toobin has a competitor 😩😩😩😩 Awe isn’t that sweet, he gets to have it all set up for him🙄 Because Biden won’t give Putin an international platform to spew propaganda, unlike our broadcast and cable news “journalists” in the US. What happen to a live debate?Handlers shut that down quick. Would have been brutal for little Joe.
CNN looks like the one whose messaging is muddled. This is sheer journalistic incompetence. Fire this person.
Putin dismisses criticism of hacking and internal crackdowns ahead of Biden summitExclusive: President Putin says he can't guarantee that Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny will come out of jail alive and dismisses allegations that Russian hackers were behind recent cyberattacks. - KeirSimmons KeirSimmons I see absolutely no purpose in giving this monster a platform, unless you want to give his reputation a boost to give trump’s love for him some legitimacy KeirSimmons So nice of you to give PUTIN a platform, as if YOU are negotiating, for a prisoner swap, BEFORE he meets with OUR countrys president.. Putin knows what crack, to feed the media, that’s for sure KeirSimmons Sure
Lol I read that to fast, I thought it said that Biden and putin won't hold a Joint. Didn't see the rest but my bet would have been because they will take hits from the Bong instead. Lol He did a good job reminding the world , including to the Russian people ,that Putin is an autocrat ,not an elected official responding to parliament or electorate. Keep pounding that message in ppl's head
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 1 more time President Biden has a stutter It affects speech production Searching for the right word Changes to another word easier to pronounce It is not stumbling We who know Joe know this Putin should demand they be alone with out all of Biden's handlers. And we think a seasoned politician is nervous in front of cameras and that causes his gaffes. Really? We dont know all the other gaffes for obvious reasons, they dont occur in front of cameras.
Dude is a vegetable
Really the U.S. telling Russia & China how to take care of of their countries and U.S. shootings are out of control REALLY
Biden, unlike predecessors, has maintained Putin skepticismPresident Joe Biden frequently talks about what he sees as central in executing effective foreign policy: building personal relationships. The American president, who is set to meet with Putin face to face on Wednesday in Geneva, is mindful of Putin’s ability to survive even as his country has diminished as a world economic power. Biden has repeated an anecdote about his last meeting with Putin, 10 years ago when he was vice president and Putin was serving as prime minister. A Sounds the same as in dealing with GQP authoritarian Kleptocrats!
Biden calls Putin 'worthy adversary' ahead of summitPresident Joe Biden declined to condemn Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin or detail anticipated goals ahead of the summit between the two leaders in Geneva later this week. Did he make up a nickname?
Biden offers some flattery to Putin ahead of high-profile meetingPresident Biden had a few words of flattery for Russian President Vladimir Putin today, calling him “bright,' “tough” and “a worthy adversary,” just days before the two are set to meet face-to-face in Switzerland WaIt…I miss something? He’s no longer a “killer”? I guess u should be nice to someone kinda next door to try and make things work. That level of cooperation seems to be working with GOP numb nuts so let’s go GLOBAL with the concept. WAKE UP- he wants “USSR” again. And US GONE. Biden is no no novice n the international theater. Unlike trump he's not swayed by flattery. Putin s main goal is 2 do away w/the sanctions which affect his rich oligarch allies who r crying bcause their income & assets & lifestyles have been impacted by these sanctions.1/2 Biden is a huge Russia guy
All eyes on Biden-Putin summit after 'incredibly productive' day at NATOPres. Biden to CeciliaVega on Pres. Putin: 'I have met with him. He's bright. He's tough.
