Why battery swapping may finally become a part of EV charging infrastructure in the U.S.

The concept isn't new. A start-up called Better Place launched an EV and battery swapping company after it raised $850 million in venture funding, but it ultimately went bankrupt in 2013. Tesla also demoed battery swapping in 2013 but only opened one station for about a year. Elon Musk said Tesla owners were not interested in it., for example, plans to double its network of swapping stations to 500 this year and plans to open stations in Norway as part of its expansion into Europe.

Ample has a different approach, with modular batteries and a focus on fleets. CNBC got an inside look at its headquarters and battery factory in San Francisco to learn how the company plans to bring battery swapping into the mainstream.

CNBC is doing investors a disservice with this dated information that feels like an Ample infomercial. NIO has over 1300 swap stations, has performed over 20 million swaps, and can do a swap in under 5 minutes.

Battery swapping is DEAD tech

I would not replace my batteries for another ones that I don't know how long has been used before. I would prefer keep checking the originals one that came from factory

Really difficult for this concept to work out in India. Although the actual battery swap may take only 10min, the wait times will be insanely high due to large population.

Battery swapping is the best solution. And Tesla was right, but it was too early. It's not your battery! You rent it. And it's great for at least 3 reasons - you buy a cheaper car, you can recharge by swapping and you don't have to deal with the old battery when it dies!!

Swapping batteries is the only way to enable 5 to 10-minute pit stops like with a gas-powered vehicle. Even fast-charging that requires half an hour to an hour is too slow when all you are doing is waiting for the battery to charge.

You will need a lot of batteries per station to keep up with demand. I don’t think this will work. You’re better off charging at Tesla’s Supercharging stations or at home. Tesla’s 4680 batteries are a possibility of 1M miles of total life. They should come out later this year.
