Massachusetts Institute of Technology's signature Great Dome is draped with a giant cloth version of Captain America's red, white and blue shield, in Cambridge, Mass., on April 28. By Steven Zeitchik Steven Zeitchik Reporter covering the business of entertainment in the U.S. and beyond Email Bio Follow May 3 at 12:29 PM By now it’s not a question of if but when.
And not long after the film hits that threshold it will almost certainly leapfrog other blockbusters on the global earnings chart: “Avengers: Infinity War” , “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and “Titanic” . “Endgame” will also need to have staying power in China, the world’s second-largest theatrical market by dollars and one that’s been very essential to its smashdom to date. In fact, China is responsible for $460 million of box office in its own right. .The most obvious reason is inflation. Movie tickets cost a lot more now than they did in 2009 — a full 20 percent more in the United States alone.
My brain hurt trying to read this stupidity.
Yeah...this aint it, chief
What's Avatar?
That damn electoral college amirite?
How many screens did the original 'Star Wars' play on in 1977? Or 'Jaws'? Or 'Gone with the Wind'? Or 'The Sound of Music'? You can't just make up a rule and then only apply it to the movies you want to.
Too late
I’ve still never seen avatar.
Who cares. Let people enjoy stuff. I didnt love Endgame, much less Avatar, but I enjoyed them.
It's all Hollywood trash propaganda. Who cares?
Whatcha talking about Willis?
Right...how much money has it made so far Here...let me remind you:
Why the Washington Post will never really be relevant again
Did James Cameron write this?
What about all movies adjusted for inflation thats how should rank them
It is amazing how many Marvel movies are at the top of this list. Apparently nerds like me buy movie tickets.
this is such a flawed argument. so endgame can't be bigger than avatar because it's being shown in more theaters? Isn't that a measure of Endgame being bigger than Avatar How are you measuring 'bigger'? Do you think 'bigger' is an abstract concept
Was this written by the one person, outside of James Cameron himself, who wants several Avatar sequels?🙄
That's a cute take.
I don’t care, do you?
'Avatar' was awful! It was just a movie about how a white man was a better native than the natives and also about how being in a wheel chair is terrible and escape from that wheel chair should be your ultimate goal. It was disability shaming and horrible.
Quote me one line from Avatar.
Go away.
The only reason it made money was because it was a new form of 3-D along with the digital animation. Infinity stones may sound stupid to people but, Unobtainium sounds stupid to everyone.
Wtf is avatar
Delete this
OK, but... “Avengers: Endgame, which marks the end of Marvel's 11-year narrative known as the Infinity Saga, grossed $1.2 billion worldwide in its opening weekend, including $350 million domestically, breaking all kinds of records in the process.” Also, Avatar sucked.
Both movies are creating more spectacle than narrative ,but avatar is slightly better in narratives
It seems crazy to me that Avatar made that much money. It's just a Ferngully ripoff...and Ferngully was better.
Because they’re both shite?
I didn’t know James Cameron writes for the Washington Post now
Avatar had absolutely no impact which is why nobody remembers it, endgame however is the most memorable event in recent years
So much hype around Avatar; when we finally saw it, I left the theater with a solid 'meh.' In reality, Avatar was an pretty weak movie with amazing special effects. It hits you visually, but if you turn your brain on, it's stupid. Almost anything *should* be bigger than Avatar
Ask anyone on the street to name a character from avatar and they don’t know a single one. But everyone and their grandma knows what’s up with marvel and endgame included.
'...the plot could hardly be better structured for the exploitation of audience nostalgia. When the second act finally gets cracking, we are taken back to incidents from various Marvel films, beginning with Marvel Avengers Assemble from 2012.'
It potentially can
lolwut ? WaPo still trying to be theonion ? Avatar is long & forgotten
True bc of 1 simple fact: Super hero movies *yawn* are a dime a dozen. Avatar created an entirely new genre in moviemaking. Ppl exp'd something completely unique with Avatar. Something that has yet to be replicated.
TontitoAaron and Disney owns them both ?
I’ve never watched Avatar. I’ve seen bits here and there, but never the whole movie.
I can't wait for the equally original sequel.
Using these metrics, Avatar was probably never bigger than Titanic (1997 prices, no 3D, even fewer theaters). Either take this analysis to its natural conclusion and calculate The One True Biggest Movie To Rule Them All or just let us enjoy a good movie breaking a silly record.
I guess the Avatar version of this article would say 'why Avatar will never really be bigger than Gone with the Wind', cheap arguments from old times, less screens, less China (or no China), inflation, etc., kinda silly argument but people need something to criticize.
The last canker sore I had was more enjoyable than Avatar.
Endgame is a murdered story by marvel studios. Who has messed up the movie
Avatar sucked ass, the only reason it was worth a shit is because of the renewed interest in 3-D, which quickly faded...
like, moneywise? i'll give it 3 more weeks tops before endgame passes avatar
Cause it's more shallow?
Because endgame was lame with dozens of holes
Avatar was garbage. I'm not even going to click on your article. You're wrong.
What’s Avatar?
Super important news.
Why won’t it be bigger than a Ferngully ripoff with bad CGI?
What’s avatar?
SpoilerAlert
Everybody has an opinion about everything these days. Even for the most trivial things
Here for the ratio
They're Both owned by Disney
You misspelled Gone With the Wind, and like 5 other movies
And? No one cares and if they do they need to rethink their life choices
