Dermatosis papulosa nigra is hereditary. In fact, you might hear these spots referred to as the “family moles.” These brown spots can be as small as a pinpoint, and they don’t grow much larger than three millimeters, but they can grow together to form a larger growth on the face. One person with DPN can have hundreds of spots. Dr. Desai points out that even though these spots are harmless, they could be covering something more serious, so it’s always a good idea to have a dermatologist check out any curious or worrisome changes to your skin, even if you think they’re benign.
