A little awe goes a long way: Dr. Keltner recommends eight to 10 minutes a day, although he says feeling awe even once a week is enough to start reaping benefits. And research shows our capacity for awe builds over time. Each experience we have makes us more likely to notice additional opportunities for awe around us.
A Douglas fir that forest ecologist Suzanne Simard visits almost every day, while hiking near her home in Nelson, British Columbia.Almost every day, Dr. Simard takes a two-hour hike up the mountain behind her house in Nelson, British Columbia. High up on the trail, she stops at a Douglas fir that is more than 100 feet tall, with branches that hang to the ground—patting its bark and asking: “Hi, how are you?” But the tree closest to her heart is lower down the trail: a ponderosa almost as tall.
But how, exactly, do you befriend a tree? Start by picking one out. It doesn’t have to be gorgeous or grand; it’s more important that it’s accessible, says Patricia Hasbach, a licensed psychotherapist in Eugene, Ore., who specializes in ecotherapy, which incorporates nature in the healing process. Once you’ve found your tree, sit down next to it. Take a few deep breaths and notice what draws your attention. Use all five senses.
Lisa Gabriele grew fond of this tree on the shore of Lake St. Clair in Belle River, Ontario, and returns periodically to visit and take photos. Seen here from left to right, photos taken in February, April and June.Ms. Gabriele began calling her tree “beach tree” and visiting it every few days, regularly posting pictures on Instagram. She hoped to inspire others to pick a special tree.
So, now the WSJ, who belittled 'tree-huggers' is giving classes?
Huh? What? Tree? How about a whole forest of trees? I love the woods. I love getting onto a deer path and following it. I love the wind blowing through the trees... It takes me to another universe away from the uglies of the human race.
The best feeling is wrapping your arms around a big old tree and holding it close. It makes you feel safe and comforted.
Mine.
I shouldn’t be surprised by the number of angry posts — it is twitter after all — but seriously, it’s just a nice article about how we feel better when we experience nature and the awe it inspires in us.
My little tree woke up after I talked to it, and I promised it water, so I will give it water this evening.
Strangely enough, I 'befriended' the EXACT banyan tree pictured here in Maui in 2016. Recognized it right away🍃
Trees can cure many ailments, even global warming if we plant enough and turn the deserts back into forests as many of them once were. When I was much younger, I planted and cared for 100 trees until they were able to thrive on their own and spread their seeds to create a forest.
Some kind of landmark here, when the WSJ prints (and promotes on Twitter) an article about how making friends with trees is good for people.
boffo

I did not subscribe to the WSJ to get relationship advice about trees
Trees house disease-carrying birds and insects, often collapse or catch fire, and emit tons of explosive gases like oxygen. We must strike back against the silent threat. CancelTrees

Seriously? What the fuck is pandemic anxiety? If this truly exists, then write about how people should rise up and take the country back from disgusting politicians, not how they should go hug a tree. I mean is this The Wall Street Journal or Highlights?
