The CEO of Whole Foods says younger people have to earn the right to do meaningful work. Gen Z disagrees.

said they were looking for roles that better aligned with their interests and values. By comparison, this figure was 59% for millennials, 49% for Gen X, and 47% for Baby Boomers.last August from communications firm Porter Novelli found 64% of Gen Z is more likely to say they'd want to work for a company that speaks up for or addresses social justice issues. But younger workers aren't just being more selective with their jobs because they want their work to have an impact.

On the Reason podcast, Mackey recalled his early jobs:"I couldn't wait to work. I started working as soon as I was able to because that's how I could get money to spend on things that I wanted," he said. Mackey, who is 68, opened his first health food store, SaferWay, in 1978. While many economic, political, and social aspects of American life have changed since then, one has remained notably stagnant: the federal minimum wage.

Let’s say my work place should have 5 ppl on staff, to work a efficient shift. You only have me and Tom because well short staffed, why is Tom and I, still getting the same pay to work 5 ppl job. But your profit is still expanding? You cannot save money off short labor

He's right and your boss has to like you. I can't imagine anyone liking some snide little punk who thinks they know everything working for you and they want paid more than they're worth. No experience means you start at the bottom like everyone else

This whole 'no one wants to work anymore' rhetoric is a weird way to complain about unemployment being at a 20 year low...

What does 'meaningful work' supposed to even mean Every single job that's done is meaningful to the running of a country. Some like to THINK their work is more important, though.

Gen Z is right.

Cheney

Out of the mouth of babes. Gen Z rocks.

I'd be able to live with that arrangement if the meaningful work were set up as some kind of seniority perk (meaning a question of when, not if). Not this 'pays your dues and take your chances' economy in which dues paying jobs vs dead end jobs are known only in hindsight.

All work has meaning (except CEOs who get paid to crap on people). I'd love to see this guy do all his own manual labor. He'd last one week.

No one cares what this Boomer has to say. That's all the government is right now a bunch of self-absorbed, entitled Boomers. As long as their SSI is straight, they're good, and they want us to go on the same way. Only we don't have that benefit. Trader Joe's is better anyway

Good riddance mr. macky. May you enjoy your riches for just a short while...

May be something here for generations z millennials, gen x and boomers to learn- we are all the same to the wealthy: expendable. And we can do some of the work for them by blaming each other for the chaos they create

He’s a boomer. Nuf sed

All the boomers who f’d up the world for these kids and created the environment for climate change, economic instability and political violence showing up to talk about how entitled they are 😂

I mean people should try to get “meaningful” jobs they truly enjoy if they can get those jobs. But of course someone has to work the cash register at the gas station. So it’s extremely privileged to think you can always have a job you love. Go for it. But it’s a privilege.

Just replace the lazy bums with robots, or immigrants.

What does age have to do with it? Only qualifications should matter. A 19 year could be vastly more qualified and competent for a position then a 50 year old

Of course the entitled generation disagrees..thank god I fired all of them ✊🏿

I have 2 kids. The older one likes to work, has a job & helps around the house. The younger one does nothing & likes to criticize people. Their age difference is 18 months.

I’ve been a customer at Whole Foods since the 90s. I’m not sure if they are aware that their products have become junk. More and more commercialized. Produce is half rotten.

Boycott Whole Foods.

He’s not wrong. You work your way up.

He needs to retire, he is completely out of touch

he is right.

Great, relatable, well written article. I agree with every syllable. I’ve been saying the same thing for years now, and it has only gotten worse. The entitlement is unbearable and companies enable it.

I worked there. They have quite a few managers on the younger side. Mine was young and she, along with my younger coworkers ran me out that job. I think they resented my expeeience and knowledge.

You mean I'll have to work there for 2 weeks before they let me stack vegetables? Outrageous. Let me at the Asparagus immediately, or I walk 😂

So WholeFoods John Mackey gets to decide what is “meaningful” for an entire generation, for everyone else? Perhaps he should focus on “meaningful” things like lowering the stupid ridiculous prices WF has always charged for everything in their stores.

What company took over WholeFoods ?

he can die mad about it then

3-4 billion non-contributing bullshitjobs are wasting most of our resources, energy and fossil fuels. Causing climatechange, pandemics and 'inflation'.

Gen Z = as in zzzzzz meaning asleep. the generation most under the attack and influence of leftist propaganda such as the kind that spews forth from your publication…

He’s talking in code. He wants drones. He wants young people to lay their life down for his ass at the lowest cost per hour. If those young people said they’d work 80 hours a week, no overtime, he’d love them to death. *** him.

Wish I could telepathically tell everyone who works at a Whole Foods to secure another job and leave this dude floundering.

Who cares what Gen Z thinks about something they have never done? You can say you have a ‘right’ to anything you want, it won't spontaneously manifest for you.

It’s called an apprenticeship. sit down start learning stop bitching

I agree. They haven’t earned their place here yet. Earth is a birthright but it’s something you have to out in time & gain emotional & real life experience to know how to do meaningful work. I bet you this very tweet will upset a few. 2 my other point way 2 freaking sensitive.

IMHO It all went to hell when the personnel department became 'human resources.'

Translation: Gen Z is trash and just wants to skip the line.

He's always been a douche bag

I used to dumpster dive at Whole Foods for fun. I gave them no business and got their nearly untarnished goods.

My first job was working at a grocery store, and today I work at a tech company, so I understand what he's trying to say. But the grocery store I worked at had people 70+ years old working at it, so I'm pretty sure he's fucking wrong.

And yet he didn't. He says himself that he was a huge disappointment to his parents for pursuing his dreams.

The CEO of Whole Foods has contributed exactly nothing meaningful to the world

I wonder why people are socialists, John. Probably because of the workers rights.

Why don’t CEOs just keep their mouths shut?

Gen Z has a solid point. It's hard to do meaningful work when you spend most of your time complaining about the things you expect to be handed to you.

Ooooh, what a controversial idea! Asserting that members of Gen Z just might have to do something the way every other human on the planet who has existed, ever, had to do it?! How dare you!?

Never shopped there and definitely won't now. Their loss.

I only go to WholeFoods for their Sperlonga bread. That literally is all I buy there. I will continue to do so, knowing it would bug the crap out of them if they knew that was all they could EVER sell me.

Whole Paycheck is what we used to call it. They serve a high end market while diminishing the efforts of their rank and file. Sound true to form.

Meaningful work so they can spend $10 on a bar of chocolate.

empowergracewi I call bull💩.

Straight from the Whole Paycheck CEO:'Fk dem kids'

You have to start at the bottom before climbing to the top & succeeding. That is how it works with many industries. The pay will be minimal at first, but you learn self-discipline, self-respect, & hard appreciation for life & your self-worth.

Is it just me or is all of ur Gen-Z friends also having a hard awakening about what Adulting is. My friends are a couple years out of HS they still live at mom's, phone usage is in insane amounts, Playing the game all night, working 25-30 hours only but isn't attending uni.

That makes me sad. The guy comes across as being a bit of a 'richardhead.' Most of the people I run into in my local whole foods seem to be genuinely nice, good, hardworking people, and I can't help but think that they deserve so much better than this guy.

I have earned the right based on my college degree, grad school admission, and honors status but I can’t find anything either

I have not watched/or heard the complete interview--- However, I think he may be referring to 'paying your dues'. In some industries, it may take years after completing a degree to earn a living wage or be in a position of any authority.

“People can be replaced” ok and? Replace them. And replace those people and keep on replacing ppl. It’s never going to change the facts about some of these jobs. People don’t want to work for companies that treat them horribly and pay them shit wages.

BASED CEO

He's right. Just like how old people should have to earn the right to not be set afloat on an iceberg.

Whole Foods? Didn’t they sell out to Amazon because they couldn’t do meaningful work?

Gen Z disagrees. 😂

What a Tool, written by a member of Gen X.

😂😂😂 can I pick a side?

Says a guy who runs a grocery store chain? 😂 JeffBezos WholeFoods

yes, pay the knuckle heads 30.00 an hour to stock shelves

Pay your dues by climbing up the ladder 🪜

Thus, sayeth a man so totally out of touch with the reality of today. SMDH. It worked for my generation, and it was accepted 'wisdom.' But the circumstances that allowed that no longer exist for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Plus, he's a libertarian. Clueless.

I'm old enough to have worked at McD's as my first 'real' job back 500 years ago. Now that sucked. Cleaning the 'grease gutters' was as meaningful as it got. I'm all for the kids finding more meaningful work, but agree that sometimes u jus gotta hustle.

He's 100% spot on!

No one cares if they disagree. They are wrong. You shouldn’t expect the same rewards your parents have now when they have been working for 30 years.

Old white guy who got rich by stealing and being assholes, not working, telling young people what their problem is.

Ppl been saying this since 1900. I don’t know where this came from.

They either gives the money & work we want or they can take the economy & shove it. We are the economy & not the rich. Their money only works if we want it to work.

Well he is correct as in they should be QUALIFIED !!!!!! Right.

A “meaningful” job is one that comfortably pays your bills, has excellent benefits and worker protections. Often it’s those who are paid the least who have the most “meaningful” jobs—as we learned during the pandemic.

Imagine having this guy's completely out of wack comp plan and then still having the stones to complain that socialists are 'taking over'

What the heck?

I went into a Whole Foods last week. It was a meaningless experience. What’s his point?

The labor force is waking up and these people really think they can gaslight us back asleep.

Time and time again CEOs fail to just shut up and make money.

He is my age and out of touch. If he is a Libertarian that has something to do with his attitude. You should not have to work half your life before you get the job that makes you want to go to work. Progress forward don’t stay in the past.

Every “young person” should quit working at Whole Foods

How can I make billions if I have to pay people

Counter Point: Young people unlikely to ever have their name of a mortgage should start offing older people until that changes. I'm no economist, but that seems like a thing called primitive accumulation which sounds cool.

He just altered the futures of his employees with his speculative words. If I were his employee I'd sue him. I certainly won't shop Whole Foods again.

Yes mr mackey I dedicate my whole life to Whole Foods glory to capitalism

1,2,3, here’s a business insider clickbait tweet AND let’s all get offended! Whole Foods has healthy products that appeal to a diverse group of foodies, not just to self-righteous snobs.

Says the man whose whole career was given to him by his rich father 🤷‍♂️

Tell every worker every day ‘thank you for your effort today.’ It helps to make people feel meaningful. Who was working difficult jobs during Covid? It’s not rocket science it’s just validating a day’s work.

Oh no another ceo crying in the bed he made. If you make your company hostile to its employees be prepared to roll up your sleeves and do the work yourself. No one cares about your goals but you.

Of course Gen Z disagrees lmao

All people who work should at least be paid a living wage and not have to work multiple jobs just to pay for rent, food and basic necessities.

Money doesn’t grow on trees youngins.

Im gonna go apeshit if you bitches make me defend the CEO of Whole Foods

Is this part of conscious capitalism?

BoycottWholeFoods

This guy is going to be contributing on Hannity soon.

The CEO of Whole Foods can blow me

Gen z are entitled babies.

Is he saying working at Whole Foods isn’t meaningful work? Sincerely asking.

Only people agreeing are a bunch of white baby boomers/gen-x !

By meaningful work he means work a full day shift for only 5$ an hour and not to fight against injustice! He wants us to take it like a prostitute

I work at Whole Foods. One day, he came to my store. I had a mask and a Whole Foods beanie on. He said, as a joke, something to lines of 'The reason why sandwiches aren't selling because you look scary.' There are a lot of witness to this, a lot of the upper management.

So he's talking about this stuff, I assume? 🤦🏾‍♂️ ***** '10 Things That Require Zero Talent' Is a Total Myth

I don't think you have to be Gen Z to not want to be a drone for the Whole Foods jerkoff. The media just thinks its sexy to throw in something about young people

So in summary; rich arrogant dorky looking asshole right wing CEO who believes anyone not exactly like him is a lazy worthless socialist. Kind of wish I had read this before we dropped 100 bucks at Whole Foods this week. Add him to the punch a Nazi bingo card.

I’m an ICU nurse. Not some douche nozzle for overpriced groceries that idiots buy. What about meaningful work?

he was born rich and tells everyone else to work for it

Wow, I did not have 'CEO of Whole Foods calls BS on BS on lefties' on my 2022 bingo card. Good on him, though he's going to catch Hell for it.

what a sh1thead

Until you’re about 35, then they get ready to shove you out the door looking for THE NEXT BEST THING!

It seems to be the perfect time for the CEO of WholeFoods to either leave his archaic thinking behind or retire and let his place to the younger gen. goodriddance

So he told the truth?

Gen Z can go to H3ll

Lol Carlin was right, guess who ain’t in the big club that allows more for themselves at the expense of others?

Really? The entire Gen Z “disagrees”? Weird, three Gen Zac in our house and they 100% agree.

in 2022 you can dude

CEOs: these youth are too entitled. The CEO:

😂😂. So true.

'Gen Z disagrees' means he's right. Don't even need to read the article lmaoooo

This man has an address somewhere in Austin Texas if you want places to y'know, post guillotine images in the streets!

What makes them so special? Everybody has to pay their dues.

Why would you want to join a union? Let’s ask the NBA, MLB and NBA players, plus nurses many other craft people- negotiated pay increases, benefits including paid leave for any number of reasons

What a douchebag. Totally backwards.

BI’s social media manager hasn’t earned the right to tweet

the arrogance is wild

Comparatively, we make good money. I cannot afford to shop at Whole Foods

Whole foods is a terrible place 😂😂😂

All I needed to know to never shop there again. Thank CEO

Whole Foods gonna become No Foods

Another Ayn Rand acolyte shows his true stripes.

He should ask Papa John about what happens when you let your monster show. A CEO who goes on record to rail against your customers core values has a big reality check coming.

Maybe my generation should start budgeting

CEO

Oh course the weakest generation doesn’t think they have to earn their way.

On the other end, Baby Boomers need to recognize when it's time to retire.

People in their mid-20s now that are super ambitious are exhausting. Signed- GenX

I believe everyone is capable of a meaningful contribution in the workplace. Younger people should not be discounted. Neither should older people, by the way.

Has there ever been a generation that didn’t disagree? Your 20’s is a sad time where you party hard and realize that you’re not “super duper special”

This article says he is 68. Does he know there’s a growing issue with baby boomers refusing to pass on the reigns to younger generations? His comments are highlighting that tendency. Grunt work is a part of the process and paying dues, but where does it end?

Gen Z can disagree all it’s wants when it develops & runs it’s own business.

Absolutely. Teenagers are lazy. Spoiled free loaders.

No, we don’t.

Is that the reason I’ve had so called superiors take my work in the past and pass it off as their own? Because I just wasn’t ready?

So he's saying that working at Whole Foods is meaningless. That's kind of saying the quiet part out loud.

should be titled 'zoomers offended because the truth hurts'

The young people dislike this crappy world we created with terrible wages, unaffordable health care, overpriced housing market and mass inequality. Clearly this is their fault.

Work a crappy job to get to a better job later. I’m with Whole Foods

Maybe Gen Z should stop shopping at Whole Foods.

Fuck Whole Foods. I'm going to shop at my UNIONIZE Trader Joes'

LOL! And he sells overpriced crap. Only good thing there is NOTHING. WholeFoods

Problem, Mr. CEO. Most of your clientele are millenial hispter metros who have known nothing but entitlement their entire lives. They must be making you mad now that things are tightening up on the job market. It’s a sad reality you are just waking to.

Duh, yeah.

The CEO is a fascist trump apologist.

Lmfaooooo what

boycottwholefoods Trader Joe’s is so much better, better prices, better products.

This is a man who does not know his customer base. I wonder how many people will walk because of these comments.

Mackay is a fool. Jesus, he should just continue to keep his fringe thoughts to himself.

I agree.

And life here in the US just keeps getting worse, the more we give in to young people’s entitlements.
