The World Health Organization on Thursday released new estimates that show nearly 15 million people in the world have died as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic — far greater than the number of coronavirus deaths officially reported.

According to WHO, excess mortality is calculated as the difference between the number of deaths that have occurred and the number that would typically be expected in non-pandemic years. The 14.9 million figure includes people who died from complications due to COVID-19 as well as indirect deaths, such as people who did or could not seek treatment for other serious conditions due to the strain that the pandemic put on health care systems.
