MOSCOW - Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny’s sudden illness has upended his strategy to challenge Vladimir Putin’s grip on power at upcoming regional elections. But it also exposes a longer-term issue - the leadership vacuum within Russia’s opposition.

Russians will elect 18 governors, as well as local parliaments and city councillors in country-wide voting which is effectively a dry run for parliamentary elections in September 2021. Political analyst Abbas Gallyamov, a former Kremlin speechwriter, questioned whether anyone else had the political weight to take the helm of the campaign.Under Navalny’s smart voting plan, supporters receive emails on the eve of regional or local elections telling them to vote for a specific candidate running against United Russia.

German doctors say Navalny may have been poisoned with a cholinesterase inhibitor, a substance also used in nerve toxins such as one used in the 2018 poisoning of an ex-Russian spy in England. So who within the fragmented opposition could step up if Navalny is incapacitated for months, or even permanently?

“Of course what happened was aimed at decapitating the opposition,” Andrei Kolesnikov, an analyst at the Moscow Carnegie Center think-tank.

Kremlin rejects findings that opposition leader Navalny was poisonedCharité Clinic in Berlin says analyses show Alexei Navalny was poisoned with a substance used in nerve agents. The Kremlin denies having anything to do with the apparent poisoning of Russia’s most prominent opposition leader. I'd bet that's not a standard ingredient for a drink at the shop he bought it from. Putin's at it again by trying to silence any opposition. KremlinRussia I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation. Maybe some passenger's bottle of nerve agent spilled when they put their carryon in the overhead. Sure. May be Trump knows more. He has a good friend over there.
