What would the ancients think of our pop culture celibacy trend? Contributing columnist Joshua Whitfield suspects they would see through it.I’m slow to notice trends. It’s better that way; for me, it’s a mental health strategy. That’s why I’m late to the game on this one, only now noticing the fashionable rise of celibacy. Continence or abstinence are the better words for it, but whatever. Regardless of the term, it’s cool now to go extended periods of time without sex. Google it, TikTok it.
And so, attending to these realities is something that must take account of the fact that we are created as sexual beings, and that that is a gift to be cherished. The point is that only by taking the spiritual reality of sex into account can we begin to have anything like a healthy view of abstinence, a view that is more than a mere temporary strategy to achieve sanity.
The traditional Christian prizing of virginity does indeed share many of the same complaints about sex you’ll find among today’s chaste celebrities and social media advocates, but what I’m saying is that what Christianity offers is the suggestion that there are deeper and more beautiful reasons for chastity than whatever may be the downsides of sex.
