Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Christopher Nolan makes a secret cameo appearance in his acclaimed psychological thriller Memento, but it’s hidden so well that most viewers miss it. Based on the short story “Memento Mori,” written by Nolan’s brother Jonathan Nolan, Memento stars Guy Pearce as a man with short-term memory loss who uses an intricate series of tattooed notes to track down his wife’s killer.
A director making a cameo appearance in their own film is nothing new. Alfred Hitchcock famously used to pop up as background characters in his groundbreaking thrillers. Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino have both given themselves minor roles to play in the casts of their movies. But Nolan didn’t show up in Memento as an act of vanity, or a means of putting his own stamp on the movie; he had a practical reason for inserting himself into a key scene in the film.
Why Nolan Dubbed The Line & Replaced Joe Pantoliano's Voice Nolan didn’t just dub over Pantoliano’s line reading so he could sneak himself into the film. Unlike a lot of his peers, Nolan is apprehensive about appearing on-camera and has never actually made an on-screen appearance in any of his films. He made a vocal cameo appearance in Memento for a practical reason, not an egotistical one.
Whereas the acting talents of Hitchcock and Tarantino have been called into question, Nolan’s impression of Pantoliano in this scene from Memento is pitch-perfect. No one would recognize the “you freak!” line as being spoken by Nolan if they didn’t already know going in that the line was re-recorded from Pantoliano’s original reading.
