But the end of an employment relationship is not necessarily the end of the relationship—with either the supervisor or the organization.
Of course, if your boss was a nightmare and you want to fully terminate the relationship, it’s completely understandable to not engage further; you don’t owe the bad bosses anything. That’s exactly what I did when I was fired from a freelance role after I asked to be paid for my completed work! Consider where you want to take this relationship. You can advance their career and scholarship goals, and likewise, they can do so for you. Think creatively about all the ways you can potentially help each other, and make a list of what you hope to create with them and how you desire to help them.
Make your final requests. Before you depart, you might want to ask whether they will serve as a reference and provide a letter of recommendation to keep in your “permanent file.” You can use this in the future for other roles or award nominations, and it could come in handy should they not be available when you need them as a reference at some future point.
