Columbus Day is observed on the second Monday in October each year, though many states have switched to observing the holiday as Indigenous Peoples Day.Columbus’ three-ship fleet reached a Bahmaian Island he named San Salvador on Oct. 12, 1492 after a 10-week trip from Spain, according to the Library of Congress. Though Columbus was not the first non-native explorer to reach the Americas, his voyage is credited with paving the way for future journeys from Europe.
Upon arriving in the so-called New World Columbus enslaved and physically abused natives, forced many to convert to Christianity and brought new diseases, according to historians.
