, and logically, the half-marathon distance came next. But I was nervous and had little confidence in myself that I’d be able to successfully cover 13.1 miles. Watching Linden’s underdog win was the push I needed to take the next step in my own running. Later that day, it was official: I’d be racing the 2018 Via Half Marathon in five months.
The entire summer leading up to the Via Half Marathon was more humid, sticky, and hot than I remembered any previous summer being. I’ve always struggled with running in the heat, but this was next-level. My training runs left me extremely sweaty and exhausted, both mentally and physically. So when I needed to dig deep, I’d call on mental images of Linden breaking the tape in Boston to help me through; if she could give everything she had that day, then I could too, I’d tell myself.
The next time I’d channel Linden was on race day. The day of the half was chilly and wet—a departure from the sweltering summer—immediately giving me 2018 Boston Marathon vibes. I knew I’d need all the grit, determination, and perseverance Linden had on that day to get me through.I felt strong and in control for most of the race—once I got into my groove, I felt like I was floating on, well, wet gravel. Nothing could stop me. Until I started hearing crowds of people. While I still couldn’t see the finisher’s tent, I knew I was close, since that part of the course ran adjacent to the park where all the celebratory festivities were.
I watched Boston from home in 2018 and when I ran the EugeneMarathon two weeks later, I channeled Des’s grit and determination throughout my race. bostonqualifier
