WhatsApp users have been wanting one particular feature for a long time, and it looks like it could be almost here.

, Cathcart said, “People have wanted an iPad app for a long time. We’d love to do it.” Note that he didn’t actually commit to when it would be released or even if, but there’s clearly enthusiasm here, so let’s hope.

In previous discussions with Cathcart, it’s been clear that the road to an iPad app has required a true multi-device capability. Cathcart points out that the ground has been laid, saying, “We did a lot of work on the technology for supporting multiple devices. Our web and our desktop apps now have that. If I have multi-device on, I can turn my phone off or lose my network connection and still get messages on my desktop.

But then there’s encryption. The way WhatsApp encrypts its messages has meant syncing chats across multiple devices hasn’t been possible, meaning that previously the only way to read your messages on the WhatsApp Mac app, for instance, was if your phone was connected to the internet. The latest beta lets you connect up to four devices at once, so the next step, a dedicated app for the iPad, is possible.

It’s tantalizing that the technology is there and that the head of the company seems very keen, but won’t commit to an iPad app. Still, in an earlier interview, with Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg involved, too, there was talk of an iPad app, so my gut feeling is it will come, and perhaps soon.
