Data Leak,Kaiser Permanente,Google

Late last month, the health care giant disclosed it had leaked the data of millions of current and former customers. Here’s what’s to know and why you should care

Late last month, Kaiser Permanente acknowledged it had potentially leaked the personal data of millions of customers to tech giants Microsoft , Google and social-media platform X.

To put that number in context, Kaiser says it has 12.5 million members nationwide and more than 9.3 million in California, implying that the breach could affect nearly a million former members. But it also differs in type. The most common way that health care is compromised is via breaches when hackers or other malicious actors steal data by breaking into computer systems or exploiting inadvertent security holes, according to an analysis of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services data by the World Privacy Forum. In this case, however, Kaiser exposed and transmitted patient information not to hackers but to companies it says were its partners — Google, Microsoft and X.

Will San Francisco rents ever return to pre-pandemic highs? The City remains one of the priciest real-estate markets in the nation, but it’s not what it used to be four years after the onset of COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders
