The long-time Disney executive is replacing Bob Iger, who is transitioning to the role of executive chairman.

"With the successful launch of Disney's direct-to-consumer businesses and the integration of Twenty-First Century Fox well underway, I believe this is the optimal time to transition to a new CEO," he said.

"I am incredibly honored and humbled to assume the role of CEO of what I truly believe is the greatest company in the world, and to lead our exceptionally talented and dedicated cast members and employees," Chapek said in a statement. Under Chapek's leadership, Walt Disney Parks saw an aggressive expansion into new projects. The addition of Star Wars to both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort was his most recent highlight, with the creation of the immersive"Galaxy's Edge" experience. Disney Parks has gone on to develop Marvel-related attractions worldwide, making full use of Disney's arsenal of intellectual property.
