Malik Faisal Akram was seen checking into the OurCalling homeless shelter about 10 p.m. Jan. 2, weeks before he held four people hostage inside a Colleyville synagogue.Akram was escorted off the property of the Islamic Center of Irving after becoming belligerent. He asked the staff if he could spend the night inside the building but was turned away,. Akram reportedly returned the next day to apologize and pray. He left without incident the next day.

CNN reported the heated exchange happened about 10 days before the attack on Congregation Beth Israel, but the exact date is unknown.Union Gospel Mission said Akram spent three nights at its Dallas homeless shelter between Jan. 6 and Jan. 13.
