Dealing with late-night migraine attacks? Experts share tips to help reduce migraine symptoms and sleep better.

There’s no good time to be hit by a migraine attack. But waking up to throbbing pain is an actual nightmare. That’s the frustrating reality for a lot of people living with this condition, Tanya Bilchik, MD, a neurology specialist at Yale New Haven Hospital and assistant professor at Yale Medicine, tells SELF. Roughly two thirds of people with migraine jolt awake from symptoms on occasion, often in the late night or early morning.

Generally, it’s okay to opt for any of the “it can’t hurt to try” hacks you think might work, even soaking your feet in a tub of hot water, as SELF has previously reported. Build yourself back up to a sleepy state. In a perfect world, your rescue meds will kick in promptly. Dr. Bilchik says she treats a lot of folks with migraine who regularly jolt awake at 3 or 4 a.m. with symptoms, immediately pop their rescue meds, and doze off fairly soon thereafter.
