This is not the first Wawa toThanks to Shanae for first sending us over the weekend.Ryan wrote last night: “The WAWA Columbia Heights is suddenly closing.
I went in this evening to grab some milk for tomorrow’s coffee only to find bare shelves. I half assumed there were supply chain issues or there was a missed delivery, however, was told that they were permanently closing at midnight.”
They just can't keep anything open there
Will frustrated Ward 1 residents vote on June 21, like San Franciscans just did, to fire its crime-tolerant city rep (Nadeau) who is passively allowing Columbia Heights to revert back to its crime ridden 1990s self?
Prefer a mom & pop store to a Wawa or a 7-11 any day of the week. Good riddance
Probably for the same reason a lot of Wawas have been: Not enough staff as with many older workers retiring during the pandemic, younger workers have been able to move into positions they never dreamed they would this year three years ago. Also many areas not recovering.
Columbia Heights? Maybe it’s the rats. Just saying..
What?! I was just here. NOooo!
Wawa's model is to have limited hours after first robbery and to close the shop after the second. That could be the answer?
The area around that location is bedlam. Surprised they didn’t close sooner.
😳😮🤔
Columbia Heights (14th St.) has always been a rough area. There are always so many people hanging on that corner, I'm not surprised they've left.
wawas in nj stay open for infinity & never close. they will survive the apocalypse. this wawa barely last a millisecond & is why we can't have nice things in this area anymore. i lived a block away from here for 5 years & it's sad how the crime has exponentially increased here.
More of a RoFo guy anyway
What the what!? I was just there for the 1st time ever on Thursday night. Could we possibly be getting DC’s 1st ever sheetz instead!!! Pretty please….
Q: Related but not related - why the fencing around that area and the metro portico? Thought it was temporary, but now the fencing is iron and looks to be permanent.
BrianneKNadeau has a warped sense of local economic development. Her tolerance of crime (see her efforts to defund the police) in Columbia Heights likely factored into Wawa’s decision to close their 14 & Irving location. Heck of a job Brownie! wcp washingtonpost
Now bring back the Five Guys, Pete’s, and Potbelly’s it displaced and we can all forget this ever happened.
Nooooo I was thinking of ordering a sandwich
The Taco Bell Cantina 'bout to get 5x more wild
There MUST be something up with the landlord - Pete’s aPizza and 5 Guys were KILLING IT and “abruptly closed” only to have Wawa open and now…
Someone updated the status on Google Maps. 🤔
That was fast. Tune in next week when someone gets shot in Taco Bell Cantina. Can't have 'nice' things 'round this stretch on 14th.
.CHECDC teachers are truly devastated 😂😭
They installed the perm metal fence about a month ago after the shooting there. Folks have to walk all the way around metro escalators to get to Wawa front door. Prob not the ONLY reason, but I'm sure that was one of the final nails in the coffin.
I don’t blame them with crime soaring in the area.
TBH, Good riddance. Their fridges blocked all the windows to the sidewalks, making the place a cave, from both the outside and inside
Police are being funded at record rates but clearance rates are at record lows. Clearly the answer is to throw more money at it by hiring more police.
Thank the activists on the councilofdc. Quality of life in DC is steadily declining. Residents are leaving and businesses are leaving. It's time to have more diverse opinions in the leadership of our city. The Council is nothing more than a progressive echo chamber.
The way they did the buildout never made sense. You had to walk through a narrow area between the building and the Metro station that smelled like urine. The old entrances to Potbelly, the pizza place, and especially Five Guys were all better.
WTFFFFFFF
Dude...
I mean, shit is always happening there
Not the replies full of cop supporters 🫣 it’s just a Wawa people, calm down. It wasn’t even that good
As is the case in Pennsylvania, Wawa doesn't typically stick around in high crime areas; they are not a 7-Eleven. If 'security issues' were really the reason, then the closing makes total sense for that particular location
Probably a lot of stealing
I guess having their windows blown out by gunfire didn’t help.
Any word on why it closed? I see rumors on here but no way of knowing what is true.
Drug dealers and false prophets won against wawa😂
Wait? Huh?
The Target, Best Buy and Bed, Bath & Beyond is next. The entire area is a war zone.
Tried to visit this Wawa after a show at the Gala Hispanic Theater a few weeks ago, was shocked at how CoHi has gone downhill. No bars or restaurants open on a Friday night, lots of homeless neighbors in distress, open drug use apparent. Ended up just going home, sandwichless.
Great job, BrianneKNadeau
Too much shoplifting and not enough cops = goodbye business!
Wonder why this occurred? 🤔
bummer for JohnFetterman who will be a frequent visitor of the DC Wawa's
Explains why all the shelves were empty yesterday
Nooooooooo!
