One young person on why she had an abortion outside a clinical setting, what it was like, and how managing her own abortions made her feel:

to report someone to police for having a suspected self-managed abortion — and may be in violation of state and federal law privacy laws if they do.), the FDA relaxed its regulations to allow people to access abortion pills via mail during the COVID pandemic, allowing for some self-managed abortions.spoke to one young person who, due to a variety of factors, decided to self-manage her abortion with medication.

“It was about a year after I had had my first abortion, and so I wasn’t really loving the idea of going back to a clinic. I had my first abortion at 15 weeks, and unfortunately I was so far along because I wasn’t able to access care earlier. I was tricked into going to a, and that delayed my care for weeks. And it made a big difference in the cost and the time I had to spend at that clinic. So this time, I was lucky to find out I was pregnant so early on.

Still, within that year I wasn’t able to get financially stable. Thankfully, I knew more people in the reproductive care network in Texas, so when I found out I was pregnant I knew who to reach out to to be able to obtain medication. I had a roommate at the time but they weren’t there, and I wanted to be alone — just me and my cats. That’s the way I feel empowered, usually — doing stuff on my own. But I did have support people I could talk to and who could help with self-care, dropping off snacks, pregnancy tests, and pads. So I felt supported in those ways.

I was in my bed able to sleep through most of it, honestly, with just like a big ol’ maternity pad. I would get up every few hours to take my medicine, go to the bathroom, and then go back to bed. Being able to be in the comfort of my house when I’m going through a rough time is kind of all that anybody wants, right? I felt like I had way more power and control than I ever would have felt at a clinic.
