An IT failure has caused almost 16,000 coronavirus cases to go missing from official data in England. The infected individuals themselves were notified, and would hopefully have isolated to prevent spreading the infection, but the glitch meant none of their contacts were notified at the time.
At the moment, about 60% of people who are reached by a contact tracer will provide contacts - and they hand over the names of five people on average.Applying that performance to the 15,841 cases missed due to the IT glitch, we can estimate that almostThat's a conservative estimate, since the original 15,841 cases could have had as many as 80,000 close contacts, although the test-and-trace system would have been unlikely to reach all of them.
The North West had the most"missed" cases added to its testing figures over the weekend, almost doubling its infections from 9,012 to 17,360 A breakdown of the lost cases has shown that while all parts of England are affected, most of them are in the North West, the area of the country that already had the highest rates of infection.
And some positive cases have still not been contacted. I received a positive result on 24th Sept (test taken on 20th). As it is now over 2 weeks since my test its pretty useless if they decide to reach out now 🙄
BBCPolitics And life just went on despite the scum media not having this information to tell us we’re all doomed !
Stop calling it a technical glitch. It was incompetence, using the wrong tool for the job.
That what we have been doing wrong; pick up phone tell contacts you have it when you know. We need an app for it. With all the dodgy phones out there; all the scams where details have been sold. Confidence in it working? zero. It a tool to aid detection only.
If you have 16,000 people walking around positive and a R number of 1.2 then that's 39,813 infected people once the virus hops 5 times. 99,067 after 10 generations.
It’s easy to do. I found a £1 down the back of the sofa that must have been there for a week
I'm so glad I voted Labour.
Using Excel as a database is not an IT error. It's the equivalent of speeding down the M4 on spare emergency tyres. Like Excel, your spare tyres are great in a pinch until you find a proper solution (quickly!). You shouldn't ever drive on them and if you do, it's user error.
Is it me or does the 12 year old now running the BBC sound like a leftie?
Upwards of 50k people who should have been isolating when they were potentially at their most infectious have not been. It is simply not enough to call this a glitch, it is a serious failure of senior management and the structures they have put in place.
“World beating” 🥴
It's a.....c l u s t e r f u c k.
1 big shambles 😡 this needs sorting ASAP
