The Strategic Petroleum Reserve was created to protect the U.S. from severe disruptions to the global oil supply. But many environmental advocates argue that relying on it to manage shortages is only a stopgap measure

—injecting high-pressure water, chemicals, and sand into shale rock deposits to get at the gas and oil trapped within them.

The morning sun rises behind oil rigs sitting in storage on February 6, 2021, at a yard outside of Odessa, Texas. In the 1970s, the U.S. sought energy independence by investing in the oil industry. Today, environmentalists point to the volatility of the global oil market as an argument for shifting to renewable energy sources. Please be respectful of copyright. Unauthorized use is prohibited.

But global emergencies are not the only time the U.S. taps into its oil reserves. The U.S. also periodically conducts sales to private companies from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to test its readiness or raise revenue. And the country can also use the reserve to help private companies recover from smaller-scale disasters,In the wake of Hurricane Harvey in 2017, for example, the U.S. loaned 5.2 million barrels of oil to help Gulf Coast refineries continue their operations.

Environmental activists, however, say that the volatility of global oil markets are precisely why the U.S.relying on the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The U.S. consumes about 20 million barrels of crude oil per day—meaning the SPR could only last about a month if the U.S. were cut off from all other sources of oil. Rather than build up reserve capacity, they argue that the U.S. should invest in electric cars and buses and other clean energy initiatives.

Just kick Putin's ass, and put in leadership that isn't anti U.S.

So even National Geographic is now kissing up to its sources for the mere sake of getting quotes. It's time to give up on all publications and rely only on private individuals with first-hand knowledge and no axe to grind.

It's a stupid gap use

These environmental advocates should give a solution.

Of course. And please remove the environmentalist perjorative from the story. It was intended as a strategic reserve by the military for temporary use only. It has nothing to do with enviros, but the consequences of dependency does.

Well I agree with this, as oil supply continues to dwindle. The government needs to find a better more sustainable solution to oil.

Lol isn’t that what a stop gap measure means?!

Environmentalists argue that relying on the reserve as a temporary way of dealing with a problem is “only a stopgap measure?” Yes, that’s the definition of stopgap.

American elites are finishing middle class

There isn’t a magic wand to change the global energy system by tomorrow morning. Most of us know we have to get from here to there, and that it will take time to do that

Maybe give this a rest rn.

Given war with Russia is likely, we should not be tapping into it at all to ease gas prices. A possible war is the biggest reason we have it to begin with. Now is not the time to make gas cheap so someone can go on vacation. We all need to conserve gas.

“I would give up all my accolades for this moment. I’m just so proud of my team.”

So relying on foreign oil is better than domestic oil and domestic job? Ridiculous

Stay in your lane.

Go hydrogen while you can.

one big nonsense...nowbody belive in this cheap propagadna...

So? Why would you create a Strategic Petroleum RESERVE to take care of long term issues, when renewable energy should be implemented?

Duh, it’s called a strategic reserve
