At the time Harrisburg hit the record, it was the second-straight day temperatures had climbed over 100 degrees and the third in the past week.

The heat wave that netted Harrisburg's highest recorded temperature to date was the lead headline of the July 4, 1966, edition of The Patriot.A two-week heat wave came to a scorching end in 1966 with the highest temperature recorded in the Harrisburg area to date.

“Water consumption took a healthy surge, air conditioners were run full blast and thousands took to the beaches and swimming pools,” wrote Patriot reporter Mike Moyle while noting a common method to escape the heat that is still true nearly 55 years later — people fled to the Jersey Shore. The second-highest temperature recorded in the area was 104, hit on August 6 and 7, 1918. That “torrid heat wave,” as the Patriot called it, caused four deaths before it was broken up by a windstorm.
