One year after the death of her husband, Cindy McCain is opening up about what she’s learned in the time without him by mcgrathmag

Cindy McCain, wife of Senator John McCain, pictured laying a wreath at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial during his funeral procession last year. Mrs. McCain admits that navigating the grief from John's death is still"day by day," but says she's learned, that a peculiarity of American life is our collective discomfort with talking about death and grief.

“John was such a world leader,” she said. “I wanted to make him proud, most of all, and make sure the country knew that we were going to move on.” McCain admits that when she was a little younger, she might have hesitated to take a strong stance on issues, even something as benign as civility; she said that in her “earlier” years, she had an inability to say quite what she was thinking. Now, she says, that has changed—in part due to the loss of her husband.

For McCain, that has meant bucking a traditional piece of advice often given to widows and widowers: don’t do anything rash in the aftermath of a big loss.
