Over the next two weeks, a championship-winning quarterback, the starting center from a playoff team and his freshman All-American teammate joined a wave of players putting off the NFL to play a final season for Ryan Day.

That same day, Will Howard won his second straight rivalry game over Kansas for Kansas State. Real questions remain about whether Howard can achieve the Heisman Trophy candidate form to which OSU fans have become accustomed. Without question, he wins big games. If he also wins the ongoing competition against Devin Brown, perhaps that prior experience will help when he’s asked to snap the four-year, three-game skid in The Game.Even C.J. Stroud could not do it alone, though.
The defense throttled Missouri in the Cotton Bowl, then rolled into January with the consistent momentum of stars announcing their return from NFL Draft consideration. The exclamation point, though, came with Caleb Downs’ transfer commitment from Alabama. The substantive changes which pushed the Buckeyes into front-runner status also pushed them out of their comfort zone. Or, at least out of the underdog position in which they have thrived under Day.
