I’ve never been much of a planner. I’ve always been content to let life flow over me like a warm rain, even though it occasionally turns out it’s not rain

Just after I wake up every morning, I dive into word puzzles . I tell myself it’s to keep my mind elastic, but deep down I know it’s probably more of a clinical compulsion, like repeated handwashing or triple-checking the stove to make sure it’s off. I subscribe to the New York Times, primarily for the puzzles and cooking features, although I always feel I must qualify it with that explanation, like saying one reads Playboy for the articles.

People are also reading… I’ll sometimes work on Letter Boxed and Spelling Bee before heading for the crossword puzzle, which I often must set aside and come back to. Shortly thereafter, it’s off to work on most days, which I spend reading, editing, and writing. I’d hoped to spur a roundtable discussion of works that may have helped shape who we’ve become. Barring that, I’d hoped to run out the clock, keeping the group entertained until it was time to leave. I wasn’t disappointed; the group was well-engaged. I read “Moby Dick” and “Call of the Wild” before I was distracted by adolescence. Later I picked back up with John Irving, John Cheever, Tom Wolfe, Stephen King, Tom Clancy, and Pat Conroy. I read Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre. But things that have stuck with me are Dava Sobel’s “Longitude,” Joe Kane’s “Running the Amazon,” T. Harry Williams’ “Huey Long,” Mark Kurlansky’s “Cod,” William S.
