OpEd: 'Modern American history repeatedly shows that war is the greatest threat to academic freedom.' - AsheeshKSi

Such efforts by politicians and administrators to fire professors prompted academics from different disciplines to come together in 1913 to establish an organization devoted to their preservation, which became the American Association of University Professionals . They soon found themselves acting to uphold the principles of academic freedom against the political pressures induced by the outbreak of military conflict in Europe in the summer of 1914.

But after the United States entered World War I in 1917 and the Bolshevik Revolution brought communist government to eastern Europe, academic freedom was again threatened by conflicts hot and cold. Sadly, the AAUP proved too timid to make good on its declared principles.
