Protests against China’s zero-Covid measures spread to Shanghai as demonstrators call for a lift on lockdowns across the country

Protesters claim that residents of the building where the fire occurred could not escape in time because the building was partially locked down.

In Shanghai, China's most populous city, residents gathered on Saturday night at the city's Wulumuqi Road — which is named after Urumqi — for a candlelight vigil that turned into a protest in the early hours of Sunday. At another point a large group began shouting, “Down with the Chinese Communist Party, down with Xi Jinping", according to witnesses and videos, in a rare public protest against the Chinese leadership. The police tried at times to break up the crowd.

The fire, and a denial by authorities that Covid measures had hampered escape and rescue, has fuelled a wave of civil disobedience unprecedented in mainland China since Xi Jinping assumed power a decade ago.

It is always terrible that some innocent people die, and it is fair to see if there are any culprits in carrying out protective measures, but the lockdown has saved millions of lives and even a sad incident like this cannot diminish its importance.

Protests erupt in China over COVID lockdown restrictionsPublic outrage over new COVID lockdown restrictions has fueled rare protests within China, with residents demanding the government to lift restrictions ahead of schedule. Crowds marched on the streets, chanting 'End the lockdown!' This has to be awkward for all those that were lockdown advocates in the US too, being on the side of ChiCom hardliners and against the people. Because people all over the world can see (again) that lockdowns don't work. To repeat, lockdowns still don't work.
