The 2016 Ghostbusters movie forged its own unique path while respecting the original, unlike the pandering, overly serious, nostalgia-choked Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Setting my time machine back to about early-mid 2016, I am going back to tell past humans two things. The first will be to—after referencing the general state of everything by waving my arms hysterically—tell everyone that it can and will get much, much worse. The second will be that although that is very much true, there will soon be a short-term tonic. That tonic arrives on July 15, and it’s the newmovie. On that day and any day after, buy your tickets, sit down, and cherish every second.

The necessity for Terminator-style time travel stems from the fact that when the movie from director Paul Feig and starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and McKinnon dropped over five years ago, we didn’t give ourselves a chance to bask in its comedic brilliance. Instead, the entire conversation was dominated by controversy, and by “controversy”, I mean big babies taking to social media.

Not even needing these five years for retrospective, it was instantly clear how much of a shame that response was. Had we as a society had the opportunity to have a normal discourse about the movie, and have the foresight to see what was coming after the success ofthe previous December, people maybe would have better embraced how Feig, co-writer Katie Dippold and the cast delivered the best possible version of a reboot of a beloved franchise.

And yet, despite making a wildly fun movie that lived up to the spirit of the original and opened a portal to a world of new opportunities, the damage was perhaps done before opening weekend. With disappointing box office that didn’t justify the budget blending with online vitriol, Sony began making plans that would lead to the current crisis that is a far greater omen for the state of modern series development.

At the very worst, it’s the continuation of a precedent within a studio system to put not even fans, but simply the angriest, most vocal fans first, no matter the cost to creative filmmaking. At the least, it’s flat out lazy.

Awful awful stuff this article

the movie that tried to be so woke, yet they replace the original cast with 3 white women and the most stereotypical black character. The new one is more diverse and no character feels stereotyped. I tried watching GB2016 with an open mind, but the comedy and story were awful.

2016 Ghostbusters sucked major balls. Was not funny at all and was only made to quiet the 'woke' people. It fashioned miserably and they blamed the whiny fanboys. Obviously, with the success of the new one, the fanboy base has more weight. Just saying.

What drugs are you on? 2016 was an unwatchable mess.

GB 2016 was a shit show. I guess is against young female, young black, and young Asian characters? Nah just writing, get out of here.

That's a weird hill to die.

It forged its own path because it wasn't a Ghostbusters movie. It was hot garbage that nobody wanted.

So you are saying 2016 ghostbusters is better than afterlife ok bud

I've taken dumps with more to offer the world than this article.

Am I the only one who actually liked the all female LGBT+ 2016 Ghostbusters?

I saw GB 2016 for the first time a month ago with an open mind. After that waste of my time, the only thing I came away with was how in the world did Feig manage to waste all that talent. It’s truly remarkable how he had those 4 and managed to craft such a stinker.

I don’t know how to tell MrMattRooney (who has hid his Twitter account) but many WOMEN didn’t like the 2016 version, which was basically identical to the 1984 version. Hey, if you like the 2016, great. People can like it. But people can also not like it too and that’s ok.

I've never been blown away by anything from this franchise except the Real Ghostbusters cartoon so it's whatever with the reviews of these film sequels.

Nope

ATC was a blast. It deserved a chance, but few gave it one.

Looooord. Thanks for the humour material for when I’m feeling down. This garbage take will perk me right up

“Supposed fans who couldn’t be less deserving” you’re right, that’s the only small group who ran to see Afterlife. Do people still listen to critics before seeing a movie? How would us lady folk know what piece treated women better without this guy demanding what we’re to prefer.

I love 2016 AND afterlife. This is a bad take.

I didn’t know it was possible to be this extremely wrong, but what else would I expect from the same mag that, when interviewing Turnpike Troubadours, basically asked the singer why he still lives in flyover country. Out of touch with readers doesn’t even begin to describe you.

2016 Ghostbusters should have been an SNL sketch. It was written by SNL writers with SNL alumni, even. But even if it was, be honest. It would have been a forgettable 5 minute skit instead of an abysmal 2-hour groanfest.

That “reboot” was horrible. The Scooby Doo graphics, bad acting, and general poor plot did nothing to advance the franchise. All they did was take the original story and put their spin on it. Their spin sucked in every way.

W-what?! Is this a satirical post or do just employ contrarian morons? You’re saying the 2016 Ghostbusters respected the original by taking the original cast and recasting them as new people. That would be like recasting Mark Hamill in a new Star Wars show. Embarrassing op-ed.

Boy the writer just doesn't understand Ghostbusters and it shows.

For some reason this article popped up in my Google feed. I was able to block the whole publication because of this article. It feels good to cut out toxic and idiotic people.

Is this a parody account? Or are you just shite at your job?

The 2016 movie was a POS, are you for real?

The salt flows, like a river of slime. 2016 GB was trash and will always be trash. Afterlife is the true sequel and guess what? It's doing great on the box office and is liked by many. So please, keep whining.

Ironic claiming the same ppl that hated 2016 version and liked 2021 version was cause of racism and sexism..... When the 2021 literally has 2 female ghost busters (one being black) and an Asian one.

Okay, so go watch it again. I love Kate, Kirsten, Leslie and Melissa but ATC was a poorly rehashed version of the 1984 original. Nothing the cast could have done, the victims of a bad rewrite what was intended to be GB3. Afterlife, while lacking, was a true spiritual successor

So the only thing Ghostbusters 2016 was missing was Matt Rooney and his time machine? What a stinky, salty, and illiterate pile of words this is.

The 2016 movie felt like a rushed SNL parody. And SNL stopped being funny long time ago The only Fun thing about this articule is the irony of reading a salty, crying big baby fanboy calling 'big babies' to the people that didn't share his shitty taste of 'comedy'

This is my favorite parody magazine

It's just not a good movie. The biggest problem is that it didn't know what it wanted to be. A remake of the original film or its own thing.

MrMattRooney i really hope you give a negative Review for Spider-Man no way home for using too much nostalgia and things from past movies, for example villains like Goz...I mean, green goblin and the lizard. -__- 🙄

It’s my favorite of the three I’ve seen.

2016 blew nuts! If you think 2016 was good, and Afterlife sucked, you are seriously mental. Who ever wrote this article probably doesn't have an IQ exceeding 50.

I mean, I get it. I’d probably limit replies and block people if I had to put my name on this terrible piece too.

I don’t know why GB 2016 is even still a thing, it was an unfunny failure that parodied the original horribly. GB Afterlife was a loving tribute and homage to the originals and Harold Ramis. Of course people are going to love it.

GB 16 was not funny. It was a slapstick galore. It was boring. All it was was: 'THE MESSAGE' And this article...reeks of Man-hate. Every word is written with hate against males. I still chuckle of a joke Pheobe said...a WEEK LATER!

Holtzmann was the only even remotely redeemable thing from that dumpster fire and the only aspect I'm dissapointed was forced to die in it.

I'm so embarrassed for you.

Sony didnt make a sequel to 2016 Ghostbusters not because of online rage but because it flops. Venom are not well received too but it makes huge profit so it got sequel. Ghostbuster Afterlife right now set to make profit thanks to smaller budget and great WOM from fans.

To you, , and to you, MrMattRooney, who wrote this dumpster fire for an article... Grab the first few dollars out of your pockets, and buy yourselves some actual clues!

That's a really weird take on both films. 2016 was fun but it's basically Scooby Doo in Ghostbusters uniforms. Afterlife ticks all the boxes the originals did rather than trying to 'tick all the boxes'. Sales tell the truth re. the quality of a story - go woke, go broke!

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Ghostbusters 2016 was a dreadful take on the franchise. It did not respect the original at all and its 'comedy' was lame. Who writes this garbage?

The 2016 movie sucked. Get over it.

You're right, the 2016 film didn't pander at all. Matter of fact, it did the exact opposite by appealing to nobody. You can't act like finding it unfunny before it came out undoes the fact it was unfunny *after* it came out too. It was awful, just like your article and Twitter.

This guy is huffing glue and had no clue what Ghostbusters was all about. Ghostbusters 2016 was an absolute shit show. Afterlife is the far better sequel, by a lot.

Weird. Female led GB is doing better during a pandemic, but sure, ATC is a gem that was attack by 'babies'. If you're going to use these terms to describe people, then you've lost all cred as a writer and removing means to criticize your work makes you a coward MrMattRooney

No

I don't know what was more cringeworthy, the movie or this article?! Someone needs to tell MrMattRooney regardless how much smoke he blows up GB2016's ass, melissamccarthy isn't gonna shag him!! 😄😄

What an AWFUL piece. 2016 GB was terrible, and not funny. I couldn’t even finish it. Took the whole fam to see this one. It wasn’t a home run but way more entertaining than the 2016 debacle

Bollocks.

🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 this is all there is to say

The writer of this is not only delusional but divisive and rude.

Is not liking either movie an option? My wife and I saw this in theaters and tried to give it a fair shake and yeah it was bad. But if it's any consolation, I have no interest in watching Afterlife.

This is satire right? You are a two bit writter looking for clicks… seriously your piece here is a damn joke

Movie was trash and didn't offer anything new. On par comedy as the original? Stop. No where near. Also there was a seriousness in the original where testing equipment wasn't a lame gag. GB is also a horror mix although slightly. Don't get me started on wonton soup btw.

MrMattRooney simple challenge here-name the most memorable or talked about moment from the original, 2016 reboot & 2021 sequel. OG-my guess is marshmellow man. 21-right or wrong Ramis ending. 16-? It’s not a good sign for big budget film to be as forgettable as it was

You know that an author knows his take is trash when he disables replies. Sorry MrMattRooney, this movie sucked. Your apologia also sucked. I think you know it too. Cos you disabled replied when you quoted it.

The 2016 film was merely an extended GB themed SNL comedy sketch that was mostly improvisational and a blatant cash grab. The original wasn’t just about the gags yet the 2016 was relentless with them. 5 years later and they still don’t understand why the fans were upset.

Paste Magazine to MrMattRooney

You're kidding, right? I watched 2016 with my gf & we were open minded. She gave up on it an hour in calling it a stupid waste of time. As much as I like a bad movie, I couldn't finish it. Not funny, uninspired. With OG cast cameos barely dialed in, they didn't like it either.

Yeah that horrible movie was god awful. Afterlife was excellent!

Interesting. Guy writes opinion piece about movie but limits people's chances of leaving one for him. Click bait and afraid to receive criticism on his take. Do better .

Hahahahahahahaha! Oh wait this isn't an Onion article? Gtfo. Haven't seen the new one yet but the 2016 one was trash. Phenomenal actors wasted on bad jokes and crap story. Kids who had never heard or seen the original didn't like it.

By “forged it’s own path” do you actually mean “it’s a giant piece of shit”? Because that’s what it was.

To say that GhostbustersAfterlife is 'much worse' than that 2016 mess is pure ignorance. Blame the 'big babies' all you want but even casuals didnt want to see it.

Cope harder.

My god. Get over it already.
