We recommend in the Democratic primary for Texas Land Commissioner | Opinion

Dallas Morning News EditorialThis editorial is part of the Dallas Morning News editorial board’s slate of recommendations for the 2022 primary. The responsibilities of the Texas General Land Office are broad and varied: Manage state lands, fund endowments for public education and administer benefits for veterans. Few candidates for land commissioner can speak intelligently and in detail about all three of those topics. But Jay Kleberg can.

For his attention to detail, experience in conservation and fresh ideas, we recommend Kleberg in the Democratic primary for Texas land commissioner. Kleberg is focused on climate change. And though he says he doesn’t intend to halt oil and gas leasing on Texas land, he would add other types of energy investment, such as renewables, carbon capture and geothermal energy.

Another notable candidate in the primary is Jenni Suh, 44, a bookkeeper in Austin who leads the group Immunize Texas. She lacks the experience in public service and knowledge of energy that Kleberg brings, but we hope to see her continue to contribute to policy and politics.
