We're closer to destruction than ever before: Doomsday clock reset to 100 seconds to midnight

The clock has been maintained by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists since 1947.

Each year, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a nonprofit group that sets the clock, decides whether the events of the previous year pushed humanity closer to or further from destruction. The clock “conveys how close we are to destroying our civilization with dangerous technologies of our own making," according to the group.

"We now face a true emergency – an absolutely unacceptable state of world affairs that has eliminated any margin for error or further delay,” she said. The farthest it's been from midnight was in 1991 when the clock was 17 minutes to midnight, near the end of the Cold War.Nuclear war between India and Pakistan could kill up to 125 million and launch a global climate catastrophe
