We May Be Closer Than Ever to Reparations

For over 250 years, people of African descent were enslaved in the United States. Tricked and stolen from their homes, subjected to the brutal Middle Passage, and held in bondage for generations, emancipation was a welcome relief from slavery but didn’t fully undo the damage it causes, nor have the various hard-fought advances in civil rights that have come since. That’s why many people believe in the necessity of reparations.

But what are reparations exactly? Where did the idea of “forty acres and a mule” come from? How has the conversation about reparations for slavery changed over time? And why does all this matter over 150 years after the end of chattel slavery in the U.S.?actions taken to “make amends, offering expiation , or giving satisfaction for a wrong or injury.” Although it’s been thrust into the spotlight under the discussion of reparations for African descendants, it’s not a new concept.

We passed around the hat and we have a life for the American negro. They aren’t reparations. Reparations aren’t always sincere.

i dont know how anything can be a reparation for that.

Any slave owners still alive can be sued in a court of law by any slaves still alive. Why should anyone that never owned slaves pay money to people who never were slaves? Doesn't make any sense to anybody.

They are what you pay to the Republicans who fought and died to free the slaves ;)

Why is teaching young girls that they are responsible for the sins of people they never knew, are not related to, and share nothing with but a skin color....?

Looks like 350 million self identify as decendents of slaves. When everything is free, nothing is.

I imagine people in high places going: “If we give these people free money, that’s it! The country will go bankrupt and it will all collapse because people just want hand-outs!!”

Reparations explained lol!!! What 5 year olds write for this so called magazine? Hilarious!

Do all black Americans desire this? Will black Americans finally be proud of our country? Will we all be able to do away with the concept of white privalage afterwards? Don’t you think this is just a payoff for votes since it only seems to come up before presidential elections?

Suddenly everyone in the US will become like Elizabeth Warren and stake their claim.

Where do I get my reparations?! My lot has been enslaved for much longer. We even carry it in our collective name - Slavs. Idiots!

Nobody needs to pay anybody for slavery other than to pay it forward with good behavior.

Well then give back all the land to the Mexican American who where ripped off in the Mexican America war!
