Officials say more than 100 homes have burned in and around the town of Greenville as California’s largest wildfire surged through the Sierra Nevada. Much of the downtown of the Gold Rush-era town has been destroyed by the Dixie Fire.

The Dixie Fire, swollen by bone-dry vegetation and 40 mph gusts, raged through the northern Sierra Nevada community of Greenville on Wednesday. A gas station, church, hotel, museum and bar were among the fixtures gutted in the town dating back to California’s gold rush era where some wooden buildings were more than 100 years old.

Plumas County Sheriff Tom Johns, a lifelong resident of Greenville, said that “well over” 100 homes were destroyed, as well as businesses.“We lost Greenville tonight,” U.S. Rep.

“We’re in shock. It’s not that we didn’t think this could happen to us,” she said. “At the same time, it took our whole town.” “We have firefighters that are getting guns pulled out on them, because people don’t want to evacuate,” he said.

So Dubai can send drones into clouds to shoot off electric pulses and create rain because of the drought and heat but the USA continues to let Cali and countless houses burn🤔

My heart breaks for these people. I was heavily involved when Paradise, CA burned and the pain and horror of that day will stay with me the rest of my life. To see this happening again to other towns breaks my heart in two. 😢😢💔💔

Oh no 😱

😞

🥲

I cannot believe that we’re in such a mess that people’s homes are burning down and it’s not a top news story.

I swear, you look at the TV news and you’d never know any of this was happening.

Wow. 😔

Great sadness and expectation that there is more of this to come. 500 years of human industrialization ... and the resulting global pollution won't end in one year of fires, floods, storms and mayhem. This is every year until we stop being what we've been.

This is both literally and metaphorically devastating.

RecallGavinNewsom

This is devastating! as is the drought situation. Very scary.

Every summer in USA I read about fires in California.....so why do people continue to live in these dangerous areas?

Very sad

Tragic. Just... tragic.

this is terrible news

praying for all. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
