'If you possess privilege of any kind, it is your responsibility to spend that privilege. Put it up at risk to protect the very people who are suffering most.' — MsPackyetti

When I was in middle school, my father developed a degenerative muscle disease. He began to lose strength and control in his legs. At first, he’d have to sit down after standing or walking for too long but eventually bought a cane to support him as he moved. Ultimately, though, he spent the last two years of his life in a wheelchair. I watched him relearn everything he thought he knew, forced to ask for help when he didn’t want to. I watched him adjust to this new life as his identity changed.

I have spent the last year as a student of disability rights and justice work. I’ve followed new people on social media, read research and reporting on the invisibility and injustice the disability community experiences, and learned, in public, that disabled, not differently abled, as I had been taught, is the proper term.
