U.S.-China tensions over coronavirus have been rising for weeks. The spat took a more serious turn after China adopted a law threatening Hong Kong.

Tensions betweenWashington and Beijinghave been escalating for weeks as Trump has blamed China for an alleged cover-up about the coronavirus outbreak and its impact on the U.S. China has circulated false theories the virus originated with the U.S. Army.
The under-pressure diplomatic relationship took a more serious turn this week after China adopted a new security law that threatens Hong Kong's autonomy, leading the Trump administration to declare it no longer considers the city separate from China.
Superpower struggle:China approves sweeping national security legislation for Hong Kong, jeopardizing the city's autonomyand angering Washington"We’ll be announcing what we’re doing tomorrow with respect to China. And we are not happy with China. We are not happy with what’s happened," Trump told reporters on Thursday, responding to a question about whether the U.S. would stay in "phase one" of the trade deal he signed with Chinese officials in January.
"All over the world, people are suffering," Trump said, referring to the coronavirus outbreak. He has accused China of misleading governments about what it knows about the origins of the virus. "All over the world, they're suffering," he said.
Trump could opt to censure China through sanctions or through a fresh round of tariffs on its exports, moves that would come as Washington and Beijing are still in the middle of trying to move ahead with the trade deal. Any such action also comes as the coronavirus pandemic has pummeled the global economy and led to mass layoffs.
It's also possible that Trump could use the news conference to talk about a border dispute between China and India that he has offered to mediate. Trump may also address legislation covering China’s treatment of its Uyghur ethnic minority citizens.
Critics warnedChina's new national security law for Hong Kong could spell the end of civil liberties in the city and cripple its status as a global financial hub. The Trump administration joined the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia in warning China's action is destabilizing and"in direct conflict" with its international obligations. The law"raises the prospect of prosecution in Hong Kong for political crimes and undermines existing commitments to protect the rights of Hong Kong people," a joint statement said.Read more: USA TODAY »

Trump considers retaliation against China over security law as Hong Kong arrests hundreds of protesters'There's a whole menu of potential things that he [Trump] could do,' U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said while appearing on the Fox Business Network.
