An oncoming silver or gray Mercedes Benz E-Class — without state license plates — accelerated and ran over the bicyclist while he was lying in the road.
Other bicyclists participating in Pride Ride tried to help the man, but he was pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital, according to police. Investigators believe the man may have survived had the driver stopped to help the bicyclist immediately after striking him. Authorities also said surveillance footage from the area could be the key to identifying the driver.
"Hey BikeFam. It is with the greatest regret that I announce we lost one of our own tonight," wrote David Loredo, Pride Bike Ride Houston founder, in a Facebook post."We are heartbroken and shattered in a million pieces. There are no words to explain the amount of pain we are in right now."
