Waukegan officials expanded the size of two planned Fiestas Patrias parades after city alderpersons voiced concerns that the Sept. 17 events were going to be “like a block party” or “not worth parking my car to bring my family.”

The city’s public safety team decided Friday at City Hall in Waukegan that rather than limit the two parades to 60 individuals each, the two processions will have 60 entrants like floats or dance troupes with 10 people each restoring the festivities to those of years past.Fiestas Patrias celebrates the independence of Mexico and other Latin American countries. Mexico declared its independence from Spain on Sept. 16, 1810.

Motley said the city’s special events team worked with the Waukegan Police Department, Waukegan Fire Department and the public works department to develop a plan after hearing a strong sense of the wishes of alderpersons at the Aug. 7 City Council meeting. Taylor said the city is working with the organizers from the Fiestas Patrias Organization and Puro Futbol to “ensure our public works and public safety staff are able to accommodate their needs.”Margaret Carrasco, who is leading the Fiestas Patrias Organization’s efforts, said the enlarged parades will be good for a community like Waukegan which has a large Latinx population. It is about teaching the younger generation the culture of their ancestry.
