The park will require pouring 10,000 square feet of concrete.

Los Angeles recently broke ground on a new skatepark in Watts — and folks could be doing tricks there within a year.

The project will transform an empty, high-crime, 1821 E. Imperial Highway, into the sixth new skatepark that City Councilman Joe Buscaino has helped open in the 15th Council District, which he represents, over the past decade.Buscaino joined with the Tony Hawk’s Skatepark Project and the city’s Department of Recreation and Parks for the opening ceremony on Saturday, May 14.

The park, which will require pouring 10,000 square feet of concrete, will feature a smart irrigation system, sustainable plants, low perimeter fencing, pedestrian pathways, seating, drinking fountains, trash cans, signage and security lighting. Members of the Watts community, representatives from the Tony Hawk Foundation, Recreation and Parks Department staffers and Buscaino were on hand for the groundbreaking. That skatepark, which youth skateboarders created themselves in 2002 under the 110 Freeway overpass at Channel Street, closed for freeway work in 2014 and has yet to reopen.

The original park’s urban, underground vibe — supervised, cleaned and maintained by the skaters who used it — earned a widespread reputation that drew youngsters and adults from miles around.Skateboarding icon Tony Hawk, meanwhile, has helped launch hundreds of skateparks under his foundation’s The Skatepark Project, which began in 2002.

County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl? The 1st District seat, which includes much of East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley, is also on the June 7 ballot, with incumbent Hilda Solis running against four challengers. Disappointing to see X-ers once again skipping our seat at the table, but if I had to choose - put the Millennial in. Boomers have caused enough damage. Time for them to retire and let more empathetic people fix it. Simply the lesser of two evils ~ 👺
