James McCord Jr., Watergate conspirator who linked break-in to the White House, dies at 93

By Emily Langer , Emily Langer Obituary writer Email Bio Follow Harrison Smith and Harrison Smith Obituary writer Email Bio Follow Kate Morgan April 18 at 5:50 PM James W. McCord Jr., a retired CIA employee who was convicted as a conspirator in the Watergate burglary and later linked the 1972 break-in to the White House in revelations that helped end the presidency of Richard M. Nixon, died June 15, 2017, at his home in Douglassville, Pa. He was 93.

He had retired from the spy agency and was privately employed as head of security for the Committee for the Re-Election of the President — commonly called CREEP — when he became entangled in a scheme to burglarize and bug the Democratic national headquarters at the Watergate building in Washington. Portrayed by actor Richard Herd, Mr. McCord is asked by a court official about his previous line of government work. “C-I-A,” he whispers, in an early hint that the break-in was more than a “third-rate burglary attempt,” as White House spokesman Ronald L. Ziegler dismissively described it.

He further wrote that “others involved in the Watergate operation were not identified during the trial, when they could have been by those testifying.” Mr. McCord also testified that John J. Caulfield, a Nixon administration official, relayed an offer for clemency and a future job if Mr. McCord agreed not to testify against Nixon officials and to accept a prison sentence.

Clarification: Watergate conspirator James McCord Jr. died two years ago. His death was never announced.

Serienya Here are your chains. Go haunt Trump.

Bezos’s mentor?

Literally rolling over in his grave

McCord led us to the proof that John Dean was the WH guy running a coverup- then tried to blame others- including the Prez. Jaworski stole documents -we found them a few years ago - National Archives seized them. Prez Nixon deserves an apology.

The DNC, Steele dossier, FISA abuse and USDOJ make Watergate look like a jaywalking crime... 🤔

Damn. Of all days.

Nice history lesson but the man died in June of 2017...

TWO years ago

Hopefully this is Trump’s legacy

Poetic.

Rest in Power Sir...Us patriotic Americans truly salute you particularly in light of us discovering the truth of Mueller’s Report rather than “Barr’s Folly”

Along with a functioning democracy.

Hmmm CIA agent...sounds like Nixon got the Trump treatment but wasn't smart enough to beat them.

. dick_nixon Weird that they would randomly report this today?

So did collusion and obstruction. But the missed that story too!

Woah

They ain't no damn conspiracy he dies God can wait you out

Reminder that Trump won't be on the ballot in a few states in 2020 unless he shows his tax returns. MAGA this, punks.

OMG. What timing.
