Two campaign finance watchdogs are asking the Federal Election Commission to investigate Sen. Ted Cruz over six figures worth of donations that a pro-Cruz super PAC has received from the company that produces his podcast. In a complaint announced Tuesday, the Campaign Legal Center and End Citizens United, which is backing Cruz’s Democratic opponent, alleged that Cruz may be illegally directing podcast ad revenue to his 2024 reelection effort.
The super PAC, Truth and Courage PAC, has reported more than $600,000 in contributions from iHeartMedia this election cycle, according to FEC records, which identify the donations as “digital revenue” or “digital income.” A spokesperson for iHeartMedia told Forbes last month that Cruz does not get paid for the podcast, but the company sells advertising on the podcast and the super PAC donations are “associated with those advertising sales.
