Wastewater data says Sask. COVID-19 levels have 'increased significantly'

The latest wastewater sampling report from the Global Institute for Water Security at the University of Saskatchewan shows the viral RNA load in Saskatoon increased by 77.6 per cent week over week in the reporting period up to Aug. 24. Up to Aug. 22, Prince Albert’s viral load saw an increase of 101 per cent, while North Battleford’s rose by 47.6 per cent in the period up to Aug. 19.We deliver the local news you need in these turbulent times on weekdays at 3 p.m.

Overall viral load data for the last 10 weeks has been trending upward; Giesy noted that as viral loads increase, the rate of their increase is accelerating as well. Giesy is part of a U of S team measuring COVID-19 through wastewater. People infected with the virus leave traces of it in their feces. By measuring the viral load in a city’s sewage, researchers are able to approximate how many people in that city are infected with COVID-19, even if they don’t know it.Article content
