“It’s an incredibly sad, tragic catastrophe,” said Süreyya Gökeri, the owner of Café Turko in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood, which will be fundraising and organizing donations for victims.

She was born in the region of Turkey hit hardest by the earthquake and was back in her home country just a week ago.She says her relatives are safe but are now staying in their cars in harsh winter weather.

“They left home with no socks, no coats, no blankets. They left home very urgent at 4 a.m.,” Gökeri said. Her hometown, Gaziantep, had a famous two-thousand-year-old castle that is now seriously damaged. There is also serious devastation in Syria, where the earthquake adds misery to the civil war. More than 700 deaths are reported in government-controlled areas, and nearly 750 are reported in areas controlled by the opposition.

“We’re trying to reach our friends and make sure their families are safe,” said Tufan Erdinic, who leads the Turkish American Cultural Association of Washington, which is accepting donations for earthquake relief.
