Washington, DC has closed non-essential businesses and asked residents to stay home and practice social distancing, limiting social gatherings to 10 people or less as the US capitol city battles COVID-19.

Unlike other U.S. territories like Puerto Rico and Guam, the District of Columbia pays federal taxes, as much as $6.5 billionWith its population of around 700,000, larger than U.S. states like Wyoming and Vermont, and its dense city layout, D.C. has been as susceptible to the pandemic as other states, with 231 confirmed cases and 3 deaths,D.C. is also often classified as a state on other federal measures, though it still doesn't have representation in the Senate.

"It's unconscionable to give DC the least amount of funding of any state, especially the unique challenges we take on as the seat of the federal government," Mayor Bowser said during a press conference Thursday. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said in a statement Thursday,"This is the latest example of why we must grant DC statehood...This failure to treat DC as a state must be fixed retroactively in the next bill to respond to the coronavirus.", D.C. was classified as a territory intentionally, saying"I immediately talked to [Senator Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
