Walmart Inc. store managers in the U.S. earn an average of $175,000 a year while full-time hourly workers make an average of $14.26 an hour, the retail giant disclosed Wednesday.
The figures, included in a social responsibility report, are part of Walmart’s long-running efforts to rebut criticism of its worker pay and bolster its competitive position in an increasingly tight labor market.
Let's do some math. 6,363 Wal-Mart stores in the US. 4700 store managers make $175k. So... that's 1.35 managers per store that make that much money. So maybe ONLY store managers make that, but I don't believe they truly make that much.
The Walmart mangers deserve $175,000. The $14.75 employees are over paid, I’ve been to Walmart, they can barely speak English properly and they were born here! The managers have to teach and over see all these people, the executive branch makes it possible for you to shop there!
And the problem is.....?
Wow.
What do the executives at corporate make?
Weekly 40 hours plus overtime plus healthcare plus uniform plus sick days plus holidays plus breaks and lunch hour? Walmart is a non union exploiter of employees and providers of goods.
Being a manager of that size of a store is a lot of responsibility.
Takes years to become a manager
Too bad they don’t have more than one check out stand open at a time😡
Does this include benefit related compensation? Based on the article min is $11, and average is ~$15- so max is ~$19
This is junk. Many Managers have worked their way up through many candidates along the way. They also work 80 hour work weeks. My father was a retail manager for 30+ years and he earned every penny
Yes but surely it takes more for the Manager to do his job than the average worker whose only responsiblity is too stack shelves and check the price
Hmm.. $14.26 is still not a bad wage compare to some educated and degree required jobs in en expensive NY metro surrounding areas. Look at the harsh reality of NYC life.
And the CEO gets how much?
Why are we trying to pit the middle and lower classes WSJ?
Sounds like a brutal job, but one I would consider taking for a couple years to pay off a few debts and then use it as a resume item to get a less stressful, but also good paying job. I don't think I'd be able to last for more than a year or two.
They earn every penny of that money.
$175k to manage 300 entry-level employees that turnover at a rate of 50-60% every year sounds like a pretty brutal job. Not a lot of people are capable of pulling that off. They are probably working 60-70 hour weeks and dealing with emergencies pretty much daily.
I think this culture of salary shaming is a slow growing cancer that is being instilled in our youth by Socialist. It should be something everyone strives toward... to make more than your parents did. Instead they want us to look around and judge others for what they have.
I believe a big chunk of that is bonus for hitting certain benchmarks. So that $175 is possible but not guaranteed
Stressful ass job too....speaking from experience working there
Managers carry a lot of responsibility
Yes - what’s your point? Hourly workers are not managers and most could not run a lemonade stand - much less a Walmart. That’s why they’re hourly workers.
175k a year = working poor in Bay Area.
Pay based on value provided to the organization
Walmart Managers earn avg of $175,000/yr 😳😳
Wal-Mart Store managers should be paid MORE! Trying to get millennials to show up to work on time is a Herculean effort! Not to mention the drama...
The manager earns every penny. Tough job!
Well they incur the risk/problems. When you make $14.26/hour you don’t have to deal with those responsibilities
So you’re saying you can start at an entry level position and work you way up to 175k a year? That’s how it’s supposed to work
That's how capitalism works. You can't pay the same to everyone. People are compensated according to the level of their contribution. You never know, some of the store manager were once hourly workers. Base level jobs will be taken up by the bots anyway in a decade or so.
Managing an entire store responsible for millions in sales vs greeting people as they enter/being a cashier They are not one in the same.
Wow I want that job where do I get one😁
If my Wal-mart is any example, I'd lower that manager's salary considerably and up the hourly workers wages!
Now show how many hours they work a year.
If everyone works hard everyone can be manager. If we all worked harder there would only be CEOs. WE WOULD ALL BE DISGUSTINGLY RICH!
Not going to quiet the critics but it's an improvement.
Hmmmm.
Any way you spin this, $14 dollars an hour IS NOT a living wage!!!!!!!
How many employees do they manage? How much budget do they manage? How much do other executives make with that many direct reports and budget responsibility? Be careful how you present this information before understanding the market for executive positions.
I love this model, we should do it to 😀
