Walmart shares up 2% premarket as profit beat counters sales miss

Walmart Inc. shares WMT, -0.41% rose 2% in premarket trade Thursday after the retail giant topped profit estimates for the first quarter, while sales fell short. Bentonville, Arkansas-based Walmart said it had net income of $3.842 billion, or $1.33 a share, in the quarter, up from $2.134 billion, or 72 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Adjusted per-share earnings came to $1.13, ahead of the $1.02 FactSet consensus. revenue rose 1% to $123.
