'Put the guns down and love more' -- that's the message being spread on Saturday through downtown Columbus.

It's the first day of National Gun Violence Awareness Month, and activists say everyone must do their part to help save lives. June 1, 2024 in the city. They stopped on the Rick Street Bridge for a moment of silence and remembrance. They then dropped flowers in the river in honor of a loved one killed by gun violence .So far this year, Columbus police report 37 homicides in the city. That number is less than this same time last year; but one mom tells us its still far too high.

Every time we wake up and we see that alert or that newsflash that there was another homicide, it’s heartbreaking," shared Audrea Hickman. "And even though I might not know the people personally that have lost their lives, that have been taken, it kind of sends something through you that takes you back to your own loss -- to the loss of your own child."

Hickman says her son Jarrin was killed in April 2020 at 28-years-old. She says she does not want any other parents to feel what it's like to lose a child in that way.
