WA Supreme Court rules that trust lands are to fund schools FOX13

Supreme Court on Thursday ruled the Department of Natural Resources must manage state trust lands for the financial benefit of schools and other institutions, rejecting a claim by environmental groups that such lands should be managed to benefit all residents.

The Supreme Court also ruled that DNR is obligated by law to manage forest lands for the benefit of counties who granted land to the state. "DNR’s discretionary land management strategies are neither unconstitutional nor arbitrary and capricious," the court said in affirming the trial court’s dismissal of the case.Upon Washington’s statehood in 1889, the federal government granted the state 3 million acres of land, designated to support public institutions, including K-12 school construction and state universities. Approximately 2 million acres of the federally-granted state trust lands are forested.

Conservation Northwest, Washington Environmental Council, Olympic Forest Coalition, and eight affected individuals from across the state filed a lawsuit, contending that state lands are currently managed to maximize revenue for certain funds above all other objectives.

House votes to protect same-sex marriage in case the Supreme Court rescinds itThe House passed the Respect For Marriage Act Tuesday to codify legal same-sex marriage nationwide, fearing that the conservative majority on the Supreme Court will rescind the right after it overturned Roe v. Wade last month. If everyone was so concerned about Roe with SCOTUS then why have they not put abortion rights before the house as there was no specific law. Glad to see they are heading in the right direction with making laws.

The Supreme Court Put Politics Above Law and Surrendered Its LegitimacyOPINION | The court of public opinion does not look kindly upon the Supreme Court, and the justices have only themselves to blame. Two reasons: Kavanaught & ACB. If Trump had only one selection… Public opinion is purely a measure of media spin, as most Americans don’t know what the Supreme Court does. An independent judicial branch (independent of public opinion) is essential to separation of powers and a functional democracy. The idea that the court becomes illegitimate when it rules contrary to public opinion is like saying the fire extinguisher is illegitimate when it puts out a fire. The whole purpose of the SCOTUS is to be the one branch of government unaffected by public opinion.
