“There were tears and confusion,” says Bell, in a conversation with. There was a Zoom check-in with the crew. “We’ve been staring at this man’s face for two years now. How are you all doing?” Bell recalls asking his team.
For starters, Bell had a difficult time getting people to join his conversation—even though Cosby was behind bars when he began. Without a huge roster of participants, Bell, who initially wanted to simply direct the project, sacrificed himself as onscreen tribute, putting his personal relationship to Cosby front and center. As Bell explains in the docuseries’ trailer, he grew up in the ’70s thinking of Cosby, the comedian turned television star, as a hero.
If this film never got made, I’d still be thinking about it. I would still be having the conversation with friends and people I met. “What about Bill Cosby? What do you think about this?” You see it happening online, but those conversations are often siloed. Also in America, we do this all the time—say, “it’s not time for that conversation. We’re not ready for that yet.” I wanted to create a space and say, “This is what we’re doing here.
I talked to people who worked with Bill Cosby whose names I will not reveal. And it was just very clear. They were like, if you worked closely with Bill Cosby specifically through, anytime you talk about this, everybody tells you you’re doing it wrong. Even people who agree with you feel like you’re not full-throated enough. There’s not a lot of space for the people who are closest to and worked with Bill Cosby to have this conversation.
Unfortunately when they built show business, they didn’t start with the HR department. So even if you see something, where do you go? And if the person you want to say something about is the person who literally is the reason why you have the job, maybe you don’t say anything because you still need a job. I think it’s even more complicated than people just not saying anything. It’s a culture encouraging you not to say anything.
It was so eye opening. Didn't know it was so bad and for how long it was happening.
Watched today wkamaubell after marcmaron WTF podcast. So well done, kudos.
wkamaubell did an amazing, transparent job with this story in his documentary. Raised so many valid points from many perspectives.
A conversation to destroy him and that’s it
I’ve come so close to hitting “play” on this documentary but I just can’t. Not that Cosby was a hero to me, but it’s hard to face.
